EXCLUSIVE INSIGHT FROM A SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“I am Luallan Naicker and I have obtained an African scholarship in Edinburgh Napier University. I was born and raised in South Africa. Now I am reaping the benefits of my scholarship to study abroad. Obtaining this scholarship I needed excelling marks and only a handful of people were chosen. So as said, it really takes your dedication to obtaining this scholarship or any scholarship. Your dedication as in putting the extra hours into academics, sport and etc. There’s a wide variety of scholarships a university can give students. I was fortunate to get the African (academics) scholarship, out of an average of 1000 African students and only 250 scholarships were given. My advice to you is, sacrifice most of your pleasures (although still have a balance) and you will reap the benefits later on.”

Many of us are living in a bubble. We choose to isolate, we choose to travel the normal, expected route – we avoid “the road not taken”. If this is you – you are missing out on an adventure, a challenge to see what is out there, to find what could be awaiting you. The reason we head “the road not taken” is: fear. We are all human – we are susceptible to imperfection. It is okay to fall off the bike and be rejected from that particular scholarship or for your marks to start dropping – but the ball is in your court to get back on that bike and complete the journey, the dream you set up for yourself by choosing to read this article, by considering a European education. It is more than just about academics – it is about laughing at those “imperfections” at the end of the journey, sharing your stories in future interviews- building your character, whether it is learning a new language, or like Dev Shah in Master of None travel all the way to Italy and learn how to make pasta (seriously who does not want to learn how to make a good pasta from scratch?) – this is your chance. It is now or never.
