1. Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)

There is no competitive exam specifically for this program. This program has three components:

  1. Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent  (SEATS)
  2. Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)
  3. Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC).

Requirements

  • Candidates in the age group of 10-15 years or grades 6 to 10 may apply for SEATS. Students of grade 11 are eligible for a summer camp under this scheme.
  • SHE aims at the age group of 17-22 years or students who have enrolled for Bachelor’s or Master’s courses in natural sciences after grade 12. This includes meritorious students within the top 1% of their grade 12 examinations, top 10000 rank holders of JEE and AIPMT, students pursuing integrated MS at premier Indian institutes, KVPY, NTSE, JBNSTS scholars, and international olympiad medalists.
  • Doctoral and post-doctoral candidates in the age group of 22-32 years may apply for AORC which is intended to help them pursue research in basic and applied sciences including engineering, medicine, veterinary, pharmacy, agriculture, etc.

What it covers

  • INSPIRE Award of INR 5000 for selected SEATS candidates. Grade 11 students may be selected for INSPIRE Internship which also includes a summer camp with global leaders in science.
  • INR 80,000 per year plus an annual scholarship of INR 5000 per month for SHE candidates. They may also receive INR 20,000 as a summertime attachment fee for summer research projects.
  • INSPIRE fellowships which vary as per Government orders and INSPIRE faculty scheme under which eligible candidates will be awarded INR 80,000 per month with an annual 3.3% increment along with a research grant of INR 7 Lakhs per year for five years under AORC.

2. KVPY

This program is conducted in three streams:

  1. SA: Students enrolled in grade 11 (Science Stream) 
  2. SB: Students enrolled in grade 12 (Science Stream) 
  3. SX: Students enrolled in 1st year of any undergraduate program in basic sciences.

Deadline: Around October

Requirements

  • For the SA stream, the students must be enrolled in grade 11 (Science Stream) and scored a minimum of 75% marks aggregate in Math and Science in the grade 10 board examination.
  • For the SB stream, the students must be enrolled in grade 12 (Science Stream) and scored a minimum of  75% marks aggregate in Math and Science in the grade 10 board examination.
  • The fellowship for the students selected under the streams SA and SB will be started after grade 12 only if they pursue an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences.

What it covers

  • In the period of 1st to 3rd year of their undergraduate studies, the students are provided with a monthly fellowship of INR 5000 (sums up to INR 60,000 per year) along with an annual contingency grant of INR 20,000.

3. DBT – JRF Fellowship

This program offers fellowships for biotech students pursuing research in universities or institutions in the country.

Requirements

  • Bonafide Indian citizens, residing in India
  • Must have MSc or MTech or MVSc or equivalent degree or Integrated BS-MS or BTech or BE in any discipline of Biotechnology
  • Candidates with MSc or MTech in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology may also apply.
  • Students admitted under DBT supported postgraduate teaching programs or with MSc in Science/Bioscience/Zoology/Botany/Microbiology/Biochemistry or Biophysics are also eligible for this program.
  • Students in the final year of college may also apply.
  • 60% marks for General, EWS, and OBC category and 55% for SC/ST/Differently-abled students
  • Must not be more than 28 years for General, EWS, and OBC category students. Relaxation of up to 5 years for SC/ST/Differently-abled/women candidates is present. OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates are also eligible for age relaxation for up to 3 years.
  • Must appear for Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) and qualify for the same

  • Based on the performance in BET, two categories of merit list are prepared (Category 1 and Category 2)
  • Candidates under category 1 are eligible for fellowship at any University/Institute in India where the candidates register for the Ph.D. program.
  • Under category 2, candidates are appointed in any DBT sponsored project and may avail the fellowship from the project equivalent to NET/GATE

4. Swarnajayanti Fellowships

This scheme supports selected young scientists to support basic research in frontier areas of science and technology.

Requirements

  • Indian nationals residing in India or abroad
  • Must have Ph.D. in Science/Engineering, Masters in Engineering or Technology/MD in Medicine or equivalent qualification

  • Fellowship of INR 25,000 per month for 5 years for those who do not draw a salary and INR 10,000 per month for  5 years for those who do.

  • An applicant should not have availed of the same fellowship earlier.

3. Tagore National Fellowship for Cultural Research Components

This program was introduced to identify cultural institutions and engage scholars of outstanding merit, to work on research projects of mutual interest by associating them with the nodal institutions. This program covers a fellowship and scholarship of the same name.

  • For the fellowship, the applicants must have sound academic or professional credentials with publications, and candidates who have 5 or more years of conducting or guiding research or the same experience in performing or any other arts will be given preference
  • They must have a strong reputation in the field covered by the Nodal Institution.  
  • Scholarships are for candidates with good academic credentials as explained by at least one publication, either a book or a research paper in reputed journals, and 2 years of research/teaching experience.
  • Young artists and performers may also apply for the scholarship. 
  • They must also identify a nodal institution and perform research as part of this scholarship program.

 The program is for people who are interested in Gandhian ideology and want to collaborate with individuals and institutions under the concept of community participation.

  • Must be Indian nationals in the age group of 25-40 years
  • Candidates who have undergraduate degrees and are passionate about self-development among communities with appropriate experience in the field may be considered.

The exam conducted by NCERT for students of grade 10 consists of two phases:

2. National Overseas Scholarship Scheme

This is offered in three categories:

  1. NOS for SC students
  2. NOS for ST students
  3. NOS for students with disabilities 
1. NOS for SC students

Deadline: Many cycles throughout the year

Requirements

  • Must belong to the Scheduled Castes, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Labourers, and Traditional Artisans categories
  •  Must have at least 60% of marks or equivalent grade in the qualifying examination
  • Must be intending to pursue Master’s or Ph.D. courses from recognized institutions abroad
  • Must be under 35 years of age with an annual family income less than 8 Lakh

2. NOS for ST students

Deadline: Varies

Requirements

  • Must belong to the communities of Scheduled Tribes or Particularly Vulnerable Tribal groups.
  • Must be intending to pursue Master’s or Ph.D. or Post-doctoral courses from recognized institutions abroad in notified disciplines.
  • Must satisfy the eligibility criteria for different courses.
  • Candidates must be under 35 years of age and annual family income must not exceed INR 6 Lakh per annum.

3. NOS for students with disabilities 

Deadline: Varies

Requirements

  • The students must have  disabilities  40% and above and must have a valid certificate to prove this
  • Must be intending to pursue Master’s or Ph.D. courses from recognized institutions abroad
  • Must satisfy a minimum of 55% marks in qualifying examinations
  • Candidates must be under 35 years of age and annual family income must not exceed INR 6 Lakh per annum.

3. Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship

 The selected fellow under this program is placed at St. Antony College, University of Oxford, London. The status of the candidate would be equivalent to that of a Junior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford.

Deadline: January

Requirements

  • Must have a uniform academic record with at least 60% in post-graduation and with a Ph.D. degree in the subject field chosen or published works of equivalent merit, which have received outstanding recognition. 
  • Must be a young scholar between 30 to 40 years who has been pursuing an academic career and has specialized in History, Economics or Political Science
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience at the graduate or postgraduate level after completing a Ph.D. is required. 

What it covers

  • An amount of around GBP 30,000 per annum

4. Raman Charpak Fellowship

This scheme allows Indian and French research scholars to pursue research in India and France in various science disciplines.

Deadline: June – July

Requirements

  • Indian students residing in India
  • Must have registered for a Ph.D. in a recognized Indian university or institution
  • Must be under 30 years of age
  • Must have prior consent from the home university to apply for a foreign fellowship program

What it covers

  • EUR 1500 per month for daily expenses, local travel, accommodation charges, and social security charges with airfare, insurance coverage, and support for attending international conferences.

5. Overseas Doctoral Fellowship program

Deadline: Varies

Requirements

  • The candidates must be Indian students who wish to do doctoral programs abroad at selected universities
  • Must apply directly to the concerned universities following their admission schedule

What it covers

  • USD 2000 per month, to and fro airfare and preparatory allowance for 4 years
