NWAG has devised a plan to grant 74 individual scholarships, one for each state of origin, including an additional scholarship for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Scholarship Benefits

It is funded by contributions from African governments, the World Bank and the Government of Korea and facilitated by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Nairobi, Kenya. Rsif supports training, research and innovation in five Priority Thematic Areas:

Rsif PhD Scholarships are open to candidates interested in receiving international-quality PhD training.

Applicants apply simultaneously to the icipe online portal indicating their preference for a PhD program at approved AHUs (a current list of Rsif AHUs and PhD programs is available here). This is an indication of application to the selected PhD program.

The AHU and Rsif selection panels will review applications and make recommendations to the PASET EB for scholarship awards.

On award of Rsif Scholarships, awardees must immediately complete registration to the selected Rsif AHU.

The duration of the PhD Scholarship is 3 to 4 years, including 6-12 months in a ‘sandwich’ training placement at an international partner university, research institute or private company. Priority for the scholarships will be given to women and existing young academic faculty who do not have PhDs. The Rsif scholarships will be awarded in July 2023.

ELIGIBILITY

In order to be eligible for the Rsif PhD Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of Rwanda and Nigeria.
  • Have a relevant master’s degree in one of the fields of study.
  • Meet the specific admission requirements of the Rsif African Host University where they would like to pursue a PhD.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are 35 years of age and below.
  • Be willing to enroll full-time in a PhD program at an Rsif AHU in the 2023-2024 academic year.

  1. Greenhouse farming: this is a climate smart growing method that gives the growers control over biotic and abiotic factors.
  2. Soilless farming (hydroponics): a growing method that does not depend on soil, it allows the grower to grow year round regardless of season
  3. ML & AI tools: These will be used in monitoring the irrigation of the plants as well as proper nutrient combination for the plants
  4. Integrated Pest management: A combination of physical and biological control will be used throughout the project to ensure proper pest management.

Students will be admitted quarterly into the project, 1000 students per quarter and will be grouped in 50s. In a year there will be 4 admissions, thus:

Annual student intake = 4000

A batch of students admitted quarterly = 1000

A batch consist of 20 groups

A group consist of 50 team members

Work:

All 50 students in a group have joint ownership of a 3 plots hydroponics farm

Each group will have the technical team (16), Agronomy team (12), Packaging/branding team (8), logistics (6) and Account/Management team (8)

What to learn:

  • All students will be trained on basic greenhouse setup
  • All students will be trained on basic soilless farm setup
  • All students will be trained on basic ML and AI setup
  • All students will be trained on basic Olericulture production
  • Students will be trained also based on their units; technical, agronomy etc so they can manage the company on their own

The National Scholarship Education is a vital tool in eradicating poverty and economic enslavement, not only for individuals, but for families, and generations. One of the key visions of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria (Foursquare) is to develop a well-thought out policy that will be implemented to meet the educational needs and aspirations of members of the church who desire to get a good education but are otherwise impaired by financial difficulties.

As such, there will be focus on those who gain admission into public secondary schools and Federal Government universities, but lack the financial means to pursue such education. Students of private secondary schools and private higher institutions of learning are not within the scope of this scholarship program.

The scholarship program established by Foursquare will be non-discriminatory, fair and broad-based. Foursquare members across different ethnic groups, throughout the length and breadth of Nigeria will have the opportunity to compete favorably in a merit-driven and compassionate educational support program.

Types of Scholarships

  2. One-off Grant: A one-off grant will be given to students who require educational assistance to conclude a program which they have already started prior to running into financial difficulties. This is more like a “rescue” grant to prevent a student from dropping out of school due to financial difficulties.

The eligibility criteria for the Foursquare National scholarship award are as follows:

  1. Applicants must be a member of Foursquare Gospel Church in any state in Nigeria
  2. Applicants must be indigent with clear verifiable proof of inability to meet educational bills.
  3. Only students of Federal or State universities, Polytechnics and tertiary institutions are eligible to apply while secondary school applicants must be enrolled in a State-owned institution. Students of McPherson University are also eligible to apply.
  4. All undergraduate applicants will be required to demonstrate that they have valid admission to study in a Federal or State tertiary institution while the secondary school applicants will be required to provide proof of their school enrolment.
  5. Undergraduate applicants from 200 level and above must have a minimum of Second class upper with a cumulative CGPA of 3.5/5 and will be required to provide their duly certified statement of results from their respective institutions.
  6. Only applicants in Senior Secondary school (i.e. SS1 -SS3) are eligible to apply and they must have a minimum cumulative percentage of 80% in their previous sessional examinations.
  7. If an undergraduate applicant is awarded the scholarship, he/she must maintain a minimum of second-class upper division (university undergraduates) in order to have the scholarship award renewed while successful secondary school applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative percentage of 70%.
  8. Only undergraduates not older than 27 years and secondary school students not older than 20 years are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
